For all practical purposes, the date on which it was recieved is your RD=> Receipt Date. The postmark date has no relevance except for records unless USCIS explicitly states so ( which it did once in 2001 http://www.uscis.gov/propub/ProPubVAP.jsp?dockey=89a5f3cee754ad0499e55e731191f 360).
485 filings are strictly Receipt date. I am still searching for the uscis link and will post one as soon as I find one.

I had a quick question to ask. My, current H-1 visa is expiring on July 30, 2008. Also, my current I-94 and I-797 is expirin on the same date. I am eleigible to apply for extension 6 months in advance, starting Jan. 30, 2008. However, my question is if I apply for my H-1 visa extension now (say Feb. 28, 2008) and the extension comes by April 30, 2008; will that invalidate my H-1 visa stamped till July 30, 2008.
Please refer me to any official memos if available. Thanks in advance.

I realize that there is no point in telling you guys anything. When you don't have an open mind, you can not accept the facts. It's like banging your heads against steel wall. Macaca, you are so right in asking those blunt questions but is that going to make a difference? I dont think so, your audience here is very thick skinned and will come up with all the BS in the world to not contribute.
I think we should not allow Leechers to start new threads. Conservation of resources should also be on the priority list when raising the money is such a difficult task.

Last night I called 10 friends and asked them to call. Few are on H4 and were totally up for it. Spread the message folks and call. This is our one chance to make things happen before November. We are almost there.

On March 30, my wife was issued a RFE for her incomplete medicals (TB test & Vaccination). Yesterday our attorney submitted the completed medical reports and today I received an email from 'CRIS' acknowleding the receipt of our response and resumption of the case. Checked the Online status and it also showed the today's LUD. Will keep the IV posted with any further development on our cases.
Here is the text of that email (seems very generic):

First of all, my action just represents myself, not IV. Secondly, I don't really care whether EB-3 ROW would quit or join IV. To be frank with you, my PD is just 3 month away from the current date (EB2 China). From what I know now, immigration reform won't reduce my waiting time significantly. I have contributed to this organization, but now I decide to take some action of my own instead of contribute to this organization. It's quite funny that you threaten to quit this organization. This organization would benefit you much more than people like me since you are in EB3 ROW. But it is totally your call. I don't care whether you quit or not.

I got back through JFK. Had Valid H1 and AP. Unfortunately (kicking myself) , my EAD was insidethe passport too. IO saw it n said you'll need to use AP and took us to interview room, no questions asked, but took another 25 minutes. Now am Parolled... and I94 says Parolled until .....
Moral of the story : If you have valid H1 stamped , keep the AP tucked away. Can't argue with the ignorant mo fo s at the counter..

Nothing was mentioned about H4's ability to work before because it has never been asked before as an agenda item for Immigration Voice. Yes, the inability of H4 visa holders to legally work has been discussed several times on this forum but no one has asked for it to become an agenda item or a goal for this organization before. Today it happened, and so I clarified that H4 related issues, the issues that affect only H4 are not a part of this organization. There are many agenda items that improve the situation of H4 spouses. Indirectly thru most of Immigration Voice goals, H4 spouses get benefit. And that is plenty of reason for H4 spouses to support Immigration Voice.
However, none of IV's goals have an item dedicated to H4 that benefit H4 only.
Goals of Immigration voice are listed on the homepage. Under item called "Immigration Voice Goals".
Ability to file for final stage of the Green Card even without visa number availability – this will provide tremendous relief during the long wait since it will allow applicants to transfer to jobs with an identical job description, travel freely, and allow their spouses to contribute to the economy.
Eliminate dependents from the employment-based immigration numerical quota – so that industry does not have to wait for green card employees while dependents use up an allotment that is meant for high-skilled workers.
Increase the employment-based immigration annual numerical quota and keep the per-country limit 'soft' – recognize industry needs and admit more high-skilled immigrants who enhance U.S. competitiveness and bring productivity gains for both immigrants and natives, raising the standard of living for the population as a whole.
Recapture previous years' unused employment-based immigration visa numbers from before FY 2006, and going forward make the recapturing process automatic – due to USCIS inefficiency visa numbers are lost every year even as hundreds of thousands of applicants wait, this would keep those visa numbers in the pool.

This is how it works. If you file for your 485 now, the next thing that is expected from you is to wait for the receipt, that would take 3 to 4 weeks. Then you will get finger print notice, that might come in three months time. Once you are done with all this then check the processing date of the respective service centre where you have filed your 485 application.
Now coming to the question of unmarried filers, if the principal aplicant's date of marriage is beofe his or her 485 adjudication of adjustment of status, there are two ways principal applicant file for 485 for his or her spouse. The spouse can travel to US on H4 and file for 485 or the principal applicant can do consular processing. Now consular processing is good for those cases whosw w PD is current but since retrogression can kick in anytime it is better to travel to US on H4 and file for 485.
Another important aspect is if you file 485, EAD, Advance Parole and you use EAD, you loose your H1 status, hence on EAD you can not bring in your wife. So unmarried filersn it goes like thisn you go ahead and fileyour 485, then go to your home country brng in your wife on H4n as you have aleast s months of time if NSC, TSC or CSC 485 processing is not current and it is hown 1 month for receipt of 485, three months of time for getting the finger print notice and you can postpone by another month of FP by rescheduling it to another month. So desi consulting companies will keep on sucking your blood as you cannot change job using EAD. If you need more info on this let me know I have gone through this and waited for almost three years to file for my spouse I resheduled my FP notice in 2004 to get married by the time my wife came retrogression kicked in and waited till June 2007 to file for my wife.
